today, i learned something about gulgol. (auntie a, uncle rini mentioned something about the widow performing the gulgol, unless i misunderstood).
angeltwin wrote on Jan 22, '08, edited on Jan 22, '08 Is that Manang Regina (nee Versoza) who's a widow performing the gulgol ritual?
Vicar, that's a perfect description of a Gulgol. You seem to know it by heart. You can be a good "mumbaki", too. My only comment which is too trivial is about the coconut shell used in dispensing the gulgol. I know you meant the half-shell but it was not described as such in your narrative. Anyway, that's an excellent write-up you made!
Vicar, do you know why a widow should be the one to perform the gulgol? How about a widower? Just curious, as with the others here!
brad, sino data nalukmg nga ubing?
i zoomed in on most of the pictures and looked closely at the participants but i hardly recognize them. the guy in the black t-shirt, i thought it was you (VAC) but can't be cos you're the photographer. is it romeo realubin? and the "healthy" children, who are they? manong mar, i recognize and i think i saw manong kaban. but the rest are strangers or maybe i know them but they have changed so much.
who is the lady behind manang regie? who's the little girl behind the little boy? who's the older guy beside the little girl? is that tony beside anti consing? and who is the guy in the black shirt? is that romeo? and the guy behind the little boy?
is that manang sesie (manong mar's wife in the purple shirt?)
please identify these bulogs... i think the last one is orling.
the lady behind regie is orling's sister (forgot his name), the little girl behind the little boy is tony's wife "bilog", the older guy beside the little girl is ireneo borje, that is gino (django) beside manang consing, the guy in the black shirt is bulldog rodel realubin brother of romeo, and the guy behind the little boy is bildi, son of fidil (bildi for rebelde).

prof O, pregunta, alstublieft.... Chito was with us during our gulgul for inang, but i didn't see him in any of these foto's. he didn't participate? and did you also take other pictures aside from the gulgul? like during the burol, funeral, post-funeral, etc.? i would like to see a picture of rose alay-ay if you have one.

i heard stories about folks (uncle celino, amang sebio) who went fishing at night and saw (or heard) a mermaid singing lullaby....
Anna, I took a snapshot of Rose about to gobble up a spoonful of inkiwar in her mouth. This was during my "filming" of the inkiwar preparation and cooking at the Amianan house of Manong Irot. I'll publish the album by tomorrow. (Abangan...!!!)
Agkurkurim's ti gusip'ng ken kusil'ng?
angeltwin wrote on Jan 24, '08, edited on Jan 24, '08 I held on to them deliberately, I didn't want to overwhelm you with those exciting stuff! You might be rattled you don't know what to gobble up first, the patupat or the inkiwar! Just like your dilemma in an "All-you-can-eat" punsyunan!!!!!!!!
angeltwin wrote on Jan 24, '08, edited on Jan 24, '08 Aaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhh, that's about the "tabbel nga nakammelan diay lakay". Akala ng baket nakahuli yung lakay ng "dakkel nga birot a burarog".....!!!!!

Akala ng baket nakahuli yung lakay ng "dakkel nga birot a burarog".....!!!!! which reminds me (phrase of the week..hehe) of an apo baket, on its way to bring balon for his lakay in the bangkag, spotted a little mound of "freshly-cooked kardis" along the wayside.... |
Is that Marcelo at the background?
My heart goes to Manang Conching......she aged a lot since I last saw her.
Are you all sure the chicken was untied before you all threw him in the river?
This looks like water dance at the Olympic!
I think she is "AGKUR-KOREMES TI GOSIPENG!"

welcome back, brad. how was your wandeling along the mountain track?
holding my breath in anticipation.....
Very prehispanic. Traditions that are deeply rooted. It is our common animist tradition that will never die in our Filipino psyche whether we become Muslim,Catholic, or Christian. It is a beautiful ritual on how we honor the dead and how we believe in the afterlife. Thank you for sharring this part of our beautiful tradition.
