The VICAR of the World

for everyone
Gulgol is a tradition widely practiced by the Ilocano tribe in the northern part of Luzon island in the Philippines to drive away the spirit of a dead relative recently buried that he or she may go straight to heaven. It is customarily done the morning after the dead was buried. It is participated in by all relatives who joined the burial.

Participants to the gulgol proceed to the river, where the gulgol is to be performed, through a specific route and must not take the same route when going back, presumably so that the dead's spirit may not find its way in returning home (and proceed right away to heaven).

Gulgol is literally translated "hair rinse". It is performed by pouring a mixture of fresh chicken blood and vinegar through burnt rice hay stuffed in a coconut shell with a hole on one end. Blood extracted, the chicken is thrown away to the river as an offering to the gods. Each participant's hair is "rinsed" with the gulgol mixture while facing east, where the sun rises. He or she dips in the river water right after the rinse. Only a widow is deputized to performed the gulgol.

A prayer for the dead's spirit concludes the traditional rite.

Upon returning home, all participants feast on a prepared food, normally a butchered pig cooked in different recipes.

Is that Manang Regina (nee Versoza) who's a widow performing the gulgol ritual?
angeltwin wrote on Jan 22, '08
Vicar, that's a perfect description of a Gulgol. You seem to know it by heart. You can be a good "mumbaki", too. My only comment which is too trivial is about the coconut shell used in dispensing the gulgol. I know you meant the half-shell but it was not described as such in your narrative. Anyway, that's an excellent write-up you made!

brad, that's my fault cos i commented about the widow who officiates the gulgul. i missed it in the article, and he pointed it out to me, so i re-read the article and when i found it, i deleted my first reply (as you can see).

which picture are we referring to here? the guy in black shirt is nicknamed "bulldog", rodel realubin in real life, brother of romeo. the healthy children are tony's.

sorry pippi but i did not take any picture during the wake, funeral and/or interment. for the simple reason that i do not want to remember sad events, especially sorrowful ones. in fact i declined having a video taken by the service provider even if it was for free. i also was not able to take picture of rose.

Remember during Inang's post-service Gulgol? They cut the chicken's neck , drained the blood and they threw the chicken to the river without untying it. The chicken was still alive and Danny went after it and untied the chicken so that he (the chicken)can swim back to the shore!

Very prehispanic. Traditions that are deeply rooted. It is our common animist tradition that will never die in our Filipino psyche whether we become Muslim,Catholic, or Christian. It is a beautiful ritual on how we honor the dead and how we believe in the afterlife. Thank you for sharring this part of our beautiful tradition.
